2024.W49: Too small, Sing
It was an uneventful week. Work was hectic with the holidays approaching, and my schedule was packed with deadlines and ad-hoc tasks.
There’s one thing I think is worth sharing though.
Every day, I make it a habit to ask my son if he has a story to share with me. On Thursday, when I asked him, his expression turned sad. He said he had both a good story and a bad one.
He didn’t share them right away, but after a while he started with the not-so-good story. He told me that one of his classmates had said he was too small. I could see how much it bothered him, but I wasn’t sure what my response should be.
I looked for a picture of his class on my phone and asked him who that classmate was. I couldn’t help but chuckle when I realized that the boy my son was talking about was about the same height as him, if not slightly shorter.
Out of jest, I told my son that if it happened again, he should just say, “It’s a tie.” Then I added that it’s okay to feel upset and praised him for sharing his feelings to me.
As for the good story, he told me that he heard one of his girl classmates sing a song from the movie Sing.
He has been obsessed with the film and its sequel Sing 2. I teased him and asked if he sang with her, but he answered he was too shy.
I encouraged him to sing a song next time and see if she will recognize it. I said maybe he’ll make a new friend because of Sing. That made him smile.
